A week passes, and my parents and I haven’t left our house.

The virus finally reached LA a few days ago, but nothing seems to have changed. People on the streets seem to continue living their lives as usual.

2064 The Great Pandemic We learned that they had turned the LA Convention Center and the international airport into a giant makeshift hospital. A few hundred people have died so far, but the virus isn't spreading as fast. The lockdowns seem to be working.

Either way, this virus isn't like any virus seen before. Forty million people worldwide have died within just four weeks.

Lockdown or no lockdown, that alone is enough to keep me from going outside. I peek out my bedroom window and see the streets full of tents and minivans going on with their day, but I haven’t dared crack open the front door.

I've been avoiding the news and social media all week. Unless when I’m logging onto Facebook, attempting to message Paloma for the billionth time, but she still never responds. A mix of sadness, humiliation, and anger overwhelms me when I think about her. She continues ghosting me while I check her Facebook profile almost every day, and it seems that she still hasn’t posted anything since then.

For the past few days, my room has become my sanctuary. I only venture out for food or bathroom breaks. No energy, no desire to talk to anyone, just me and my existential dread.

My parents are on their computers as always when I walk into the kitchen to get something to eat.

I peer into the fridge and then the pantry. The shelves are empty. "What do we have to eat?"

My mother doesn’t look away from her screen as she says,

"We have bread on top of the fridge."

I curl my nose and reach on top of the fridge for the bread.

There is one slice left. "What am I supposed to do with this?"
